I think, at the other end, early dementia and Alzheimer's are examples of what happens to us when memory fails. Memory is critically important to us and we ignore the ability to remember at our peril.
Economists talk about "revealed preferences", preferences that can be inferred from behaviour., that may contrast with "stated preferences". I think that may apply when advocates of progressive education talk about our mental faculties. They may say memory is not important, but they would fear memory loss like everybody else does. Equally, we could look at those who say IQ is a social construct and IQ tests only measure the ability to do IQ tests. Would they have no objection to being exposed to pollutants (like lead) that are believed to lower IQ?
