Paractical uses of AI in the classroom
Last year, at a ResearchEd event, I attended a talk on educational technology by Daisy Christodoulou. It prompted me to repost an old blog post explaining my scepticism about “edtech”.
More recently, I went to ResearchEd Birmingham, where Daisy was again talking about educational technology. This time her talk was about the use of AI in assessment. There was also a popular talk on AI by Kevin McLaughlin. It’s fair to say that AI is a hot topic among teachers. Recent discussions made me reflect on my own use of AI. While I’ve always been critical of the way educational technology has been implemented in schools over the years, AI strikes me as quite different.1 It feels far more grassroots. Although some school leaders are jumping on the bandwagon, most of the effective uses I’ve heard about have come from ordinary classroom teachers finding practical ways to make their jobs easier.
I’ve found AI, specifically ChatGPT, to be genuinely useful in my classroom practice. Here are the main ways I’ve been using it.
